6 MONTHS

  • Turns his head to parent's voice, even if across the room
  • Babbles using single and repetitive syllables
  • Uses his whole hand to obtain objects
  • Transfers objects from one hand to another
  • When lying on stomach, supports self on arms and lifts head and chest strongly
  • Rolls over tummy to back and back to tummy
  • Sits with assistance or may sit alone
  • Smiles, laughs, and squeals

 12 MONTHS

  • Babbling sounds like talking to express moods, demand attention, or refer to objects
  • Uses "mama" and "dada" and maybe 2-3 other words
  • Understands "no"
  • Responds to simple commands, e.g. "Give it to mommy."
  • Recognizes own name and turns to speaker when hearing it
  • Uses thumb and forefinger to grasp items
  • Crawls well
  • Stands alone for a few seconds
  • Pulls self up to a standing position
  • May begin to walk without help
  • Seeks and finds hidden toys easily

 18 MONTHS

  • Uses 6-20+ words
  • Recognizes pictures of familiar persons and objects
  • Uses words to make wants known, such as "more"
  • "Talks" to self while playing
  • Points to 2-3 body parts on self or a doll
  • Scribbles with a crayon on paper
  • Pushes and pulls objects
  • Walks without help
  • Climbs into a large chair, rotates body, and sits
  • Drinks from a cup
  • Removes shoes, socks, cap
  • Imitates familiar actions, such as sweeping the floor

 2 YEARS

  • Has a vocabulary of several hundred words, including names of toys and things in the house
  • Asks for things he wants such as a toy or food
  • Uses phrases or sentences of two or three words
  • Responds to questions such as "What is your name?"
  • Speech is at least half understandable
  • Builds a tower of 4-6 blocks
  • Imitates a vertical line with a crayon on paper
  • Runs more than walks
  • Can climb stairs using both feet on one step
  • Can throw and kick a ball

 3 YEARS

  • Speaks in sentences of three to five words, uses about 250 words, understands about 2,000 words
  • Knows at least one primary color
  • Can follow a one-step direction, e.g. "Put on your coat."
  • Can stay with an activity from three to five minutes
  • Rides a tricycle
  • Can throw a ball, catch a large ball, and kick a ball forward
  • Washes hands by herself
  • Can dress and undress herself
  • Can jump with both feet
  • Can count to five
  • Sings the alphabet song - or at least part of it

 4 YEARS

  • Asks many questions
  • Uses fairly complex sentences
  • Can count to ten and sing the alphabet
  • Can crudely copy some shapes and letters
  • Knows colors and shapes.  Can sort items by size, color, shape, and similarity
  • Understands concepts:  tallest, biggest, same, more, on, in, under, above, behind, before, after
  • Can attend to an activity for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Hops on one foot
  • Cuts paper along a line with a scissors

  5 YEARS

  • Understands approximately 13,000 words
  • Able to memorize address and phone number
  • Knows books are read from left to right
  • Can sort objects by size:  little to big
  • Can draw pictures that represent people, animals, and objects 
  • Can count to 20
  • Can follow a series of instructions
  • Skips and gallops
  • Can copy simple shapes and designs
  • Cuts on a line with scissors
  • May be able to identify some letters and numbers
